Three Vital Hemophilia Drugs at Risk of Import Halt

The cycle of sending Iranian plasma abroad and the failure to return the processed medicines is the result of overdue debts and years of mismanagement—a crisis that now poses a direct threat to the lives of hemophilia patients.

Iran Hemophilia Society: Three Vital Hemophilia Drugs at Risk of Import Halt

According to Salamat News quoting Fana, given recent international developments and the possible activation of the “snapback mechanism,” serious concerns have emerged regarding the supply of essential medicines for hemophilia patients in the country.

At present, only three key and irreplaceable medicines in the field of hemophilia and coagulation disorders—Fibrinogen, Humate, and Fibrogammin—can be imported solely through the EIH (preferred currency) channel. These medicines are exclusively manufactured by CSL, a company with major American investors and shareholders, for which obtaining an OFAC license is mandatory to continue exports.

On the other hand, overdue debts to foreign plasma refiners and the halt in the cycle of sending collected Iranian plasma for processing and the return of derived products highlight the urgent need to establish a domestic plasma fractionation plant. Negligence by previous government officials and unfulfilled promises from companies over the past decades have inflicted heavy economic and medical losses on the country and its patients—and continue to do so.

If any obstacles arise in obtaining licenses or if sanctions intensify, hemophilia patients in Iran will face an immediate and severe crisis in drug supply. This situation could have wide-ranging humanitarian and social consequences, threatening the lives of thousands of patients.

Therefore, with emphasis on the urgency of the matter, the following actions are necessary:

  • Establishing strategic drug reserves for hemophilia patients
  • Conducting diplomatic and official negotiations to ensure the issuance of OFAC export licenses
  • Identifying and securing reliable alternative sources to prevent any treatment interruptions
  • Providing transparent and timely information to patients and their families

Ignoring this warning could lead to an irreparable crisis. It is expected that the relevant authorities take immediate and decisive action to prevent such a situation.
