Electrode implantation surgery in the brain for the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy

Electrode implantation surgery in the brain to treat drug-resistant epilepsy was performed for the first time in the country at Tajrish Martyrs’ Medical, Educational and Therapeutic Center for a 17-year-old girl.

In recent years, one of the innovative methods used to treat seizures resistant to medical treatment is stimulating the deep parts of the brain. Neurosurgeon Dr. Alireza Zali explained.

In this type of surgery, if we can remove the center of the seizure, but because his lesion was located near the speech center, it was not possible to remove this area, and for this reason, the treatment was done through the method of deep brain stimulation. He added.

Zali stated that the patient had been suffering from convulsions since two years ago, and said that since 7 months ago, these convulsions had increased and all kinds of drugs were used to control the convulsions, but their results were not successful.

The cost of this surgery is high because of the electrode, which is covered by insurance in Iran.
