One million tons of rotten apples is equivalent to one third of the current volume of Lake Urmia

The water that was spent on agriculture and countless wells in these years made a salt and swamp plain from Lake Urmia, and at least one million tons of rotten fruit waste from apple orchards, which must be spent for its evacuation and destruction. This is a summary of the current conditions of the Great Lake in northwest Iran.

According to the calculations of the Water Research Institute, in order to produce one million tons of apples, we have to release 270 million cubic meters of water to the orchards every year.

With this volume of water, Urmia Lake can be restored within 10 years.

Similar to this news, it has been repeated many times in the past years, and apple is not the only water-bearing product grown in West Azerbaijan; Along with alfalfa, cherries and cherries, sugar beet is the 4 products with the highest water consumption among agricultural products in the production basket of Urmia farmers.
