Artificial intelligence is not a doctor.

The President of the Iranian Association of Doctoral Laboratory Sciences Warns Against Non-Expert Interpretation of Medical Test Results by AI Systems

Dr. Fariba Shayegan, President of the Iranian Association of Doctoral Laboratory Sciences, has warned against the non-professional interpretation of medical test results by artificial intelligence systems or unofficial mobile applications. She emphasized that scientific judgment and final diagnosis must be made by physicians and laboratory medicine specialists, as any incorrect interpretation can pose a serious threat to patients’ health.

Referring to the rapid growth of digital technologies and smart tools, Shayegan added: “No technology, not even the most advanced algorithms, can replace the clinical judgment and human experience of a physician.”

She stressed that AI systems lack clinical understanding and human insight and therefore cannot substitute for the specialized diagnostic process.

Shayegan cautioned that in recent months, there has been an increase in patients using AI-based lab result interpreters, which in some cases has led to unnecessary anxiety, misguided treatment decisions, and even damage to public trust in laboratory services.
